Vintage Black Memorabilia - Large Mammy Face String Holder

$375.00 plus $24.00 Insured U.S. Priority Shipping

This wonderful piece of black memorabilia is a mammy stringholder from the 1930's or early 40's. String had many uses around the house and particularly in the kitchen. This piece would have been hung on the wall to hold a large ball of string and the end would come out through the hole in her mouth. She has a beautiful, smiling face. Small black curls peek from behind her white bandana with its blurred soft blue polka-dots. It is made of a soft paste pottery or ceramic. The red lips are painted but the rest of the color is glazed. On the edge of the back it is stamped Japan and there is a hole at the top for hanging.

She is an impressive size measuring about 6 ½” in length, 5 5/8” wide and about 4 ¼” front to back. She has good color and is in very good condition with minimal wear. There is a little bit of paint loss on the lips and a little bit of roughness on the inside edge of the back.
